2022 Beechworth Syrah

2022 Beechworth Syrah

$44.00

Part of our new high-altitude Beechworth range. A brand-new Syrah for us. An earlier drinking blend comprised of sites across Beechworth, from our own Thorley vineyard, the highest altitude Syrah in Victoria as well as Indigo vineyard, and our new Abotomy vineyard on the lower traditional granite soils.

This wine provides a snapshot of the cool 2022 growing season, where spice and savoury characters prevail. Whole berry fermentation and no new oak lets the wine tell the story of the season and the sites, from the cool spice and florals that typify Thorley Syrah through to a complex array of red and blue fruits, brine and savoury nut and dried coco aromatics.

“Hailing from Beechworth, the 2022 Syrah is spicy and fine on the nose, drenched in black cherry, star anise/clove, licorice and cinnamon on toast. It has that character of French toast with cinnamon. It's fine and lithe and really elegant. It's not heavy or big—not sweet, rambunctious or full throttle. There's an open-weave authenticity here that I am attracted to—it's "available" somehow. It's a light-footed, sure-footed thing: it tiptoes with purpose. It's almost febrile. I like it so much. Burgundy glass required. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.” Awarded 94 points by Erin Larkin for Robert Parker, Wine Advocate.

“This Syrah is not to be confused with VS&B Shiraz. It’s from three high vineyards in the Beechworth region. It sees no new oak. If you enjoy a more savoury-styled shiraz, then you’re going to love this. It’s floral, it’s high in energy, it has a certain built-on-acidity tension and yet there’s so much effortless complexity tripping throughout. It tastes of strawberry and boysenberry, red cherry, meat, pot pourri, peanut shells and an arrangement of florals, the net effect of which is both pretty and intriguing at once. There’s also a minted raspberry characters here, sweet and lifted, which only develops with air and is delicious to say the least. There’s not a lot of weight here, but there’s a great deal of enjoyment.” Awarded 93 points by Campbell Mattinson for The Wine Front.

“Bright ruby red with a glint of purple to the rim. A heady and aromatic lift of raspberry, bay leaf and mountain florals. Medium in weight with a silken tannin profile, it glides long and lingering shows notes of forest berries, smoky herbs, and bright rose petal tones. Time will see more savoury notes evolve.” Awarded 93 points by Stuart Know for The Real Review.
